A short loop through some of the city's most distinctive corners, easily done in an afternoon and entirely on foot. It starts at Østerport Station, threads past a lake, a former neighborhood of mine, and a royal castle, then follows the water down to Nyhavn and across the harbor to a street food market — a good, informal way to end it.
Start — Østerport Station
S-train to Østerport Station. This is where the walk begins.
1Sortedams Sø
The north end of Sortedams Sø, one of Copenhagen's five interconnected lakes.
2Kartoffelrækkerne
Cut through Kartoffelrækkerne — the "Potato Rows" — a former neighborhood of mine. Long rows of small, nearly identical terraced houses line narrow cobbled streets, giving the whole area a unique, storybook feel.
3Rosenborg Castle & Kongens Have
Rosenborg Castle and the surrounding King's Garden (Kongens Have). Fun detail to watch for: if the palace guards are walking around carrying what look like supermarket bags, there's a good chance the Crown Jewels — kept inside Rosenborg — are being moved for safekeeping.
4A Sightline: Church, Palace, Opera
The sightline of Frederik's Church (the Marble Church) → Amalienborg Palace → the Opera House across the harbor — three landmarks on one deliberate axis: religion, power, and culture.
5Nyhavn
Along the water to Nyhavn, the iconic canal with colorful 17th-century townhouses.
6Broens Gadekøkken
Cross the Inderhavnsbroen footbridge to Broens Gadekøkken, a street food market on the other side of the harbor. A good place to end the walk.
